He was the son of a Methodist minister who was also a physician and farmer. He followed in his father\u2019s footsteps by studying medicine, although he also studied engineering. He stood out for his curious spirit, as well as his mechanistic, rationalist, and analogical thinking. He summarised its fundamental principle in the phrase: \u201cStructure governs function.\u201d His approach was based on promoting the correction of skeletal structure in order to achieve an improvement in organ function. In his own words: \u201cAnatomy is the first, the last, and always present.\u201d   <\/p><p><br>The new techniques he developed himself brought him great success. They attracted a large number of patients, and Still became a well-known figure of his time. Faced with the rapid increase in patients and the growing demand for treatment, he eventually decided to pass on his teachings in order to provide care for a greater number of patients. He was assisted in this process by Dr. W. In addition to being a journalist, Littlejohn was a medical doctor specialising in physiology. He quickly became <strong>A. T. Still\u2019s right-hand<\/strong> man and was appointed dean of the Kirksville University.  <\/p><p>He added fundamental sciences such as Chemistry to the academic curriculum and highlighted the importance of studying Physiology for health. According to Littlejohn: <strong>\u201cPhysiology is the gateway to the immense world of Osteopathy.\u201d<\/strong> <\/p><p>He founded <strong>the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine<\/strong>, which became one of the most important schools in the United States.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ab1e517 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"ab1e517\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"738\" height=\"415\" src=\"https:\/\/www.osteopatas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/roe-historia-1892-1900.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-22423\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8b2e920 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8b2e920\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>We owe to Littlejohn the development of a more global and holistic approach to osteopathy, and in particular the emergence of techniques such as T.G.O. (General Osteopathic Treatment, later developed by J. Wernham), which is based on his studies of human biomechanics and, specifically, the influence of gravitational force on posture.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-899f168 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"899f168\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In 1917, Littlejohn left Chicago and returned to Europe. He settled in London, where he founded the British School of Osteopathy.
